“Is Medea a Wife Only, or Also a Mother” Discuss.

Medea a Wife Only or Also a Mother

Medea was the Daughter of a king of Colchis which was a land of magic and enchantment. She was a sorceress, but at the same time was a symbol of maiden purity. She fell in love with Jason and subordinated everything to her love and passion. Jason, her husband, came across Glauce, the daughter of Creon, and secretly married her. It was a bitter betrayal and treachery which was a rude shock to her. Medea became furious and determined to take revenge on her husband.

Medea a Wife Only or Also a Mother

Medea was not only a wife, but also a mother. She had two children whom she loved very dearly. In spite of being a barbarian she loved and adored her children as much as a mother of the civilized people. After the second marriage the intense love was turned into bitter hatred which was not only for the children, but for their father too. Whatever else she was, she was not a sacrificing type of woman. She nursed a terrible spirit of vengeance and decided to take revenge at any cost. She would not spare her husband a bit. She might be described as an egoist and would not allow anybody to share her husband. Like a lioness in her den, she was meditating revenge. Medea was found often turning her blood-thirsty eyes upon her children. She loved them deeply and that was why, she would not allow her children to be tortured by anyone else. So she decided to kill her children herself. She sought to destroy them along with their father and the whole of the race. In this way the blushing maiden turned into a vengeful wife. We may conclude that Medea was not only a wife but also a mother.
