Describe the Significance of the Good and the Evil Angel.

Significance of the Good and the Evil Angel

The Good Angel and the Evil Angel create inner conflict in the mind of Faustus when the Good Angel urges him to shun black art of magic, and the Evil Angel tempts hi with infinite power which magic will provide for him. The Good and the Evil Angels gives the touch of Morality play to Doctor Faustus. The characters of the Morality play are allegorical. They ae personified as abstractions of vice or

virtues. The Good and the Evil Angels represent the path of virtue, and sin and damnation respectively. Their characters also reflect Christian belief that humans are assigned guardian angels, and that devils can influence human thoughts.

The Good and Evil Angels personify the two aspects of Faustus’s character. The former stands for order, virtue or goodness and the latter represents the baser spirit of Faustus, his indomitable passions and desires. One stands for his conscience and the other, his curiosity for ‘unlawful things.’
