between the peoples of two races, the English and the Indians. But on arriving at the club Mrs. Moore and Adela, find that the Indian guest is being neglected by the English man and woman. Urged by her husbands, the collector’s wife, Mrs.Turton, reluctantly takes Mrs. Moore and Adela to the Indian woman. She reminds them that they are superior to any of the woman they meet. When she reaches the gathering of Indian women she goes up to them and welcomes them in the rough Urdu that she uses to talk to her servant. Only Mrs. Moore and Adela make genuine efforts to meet and talk to the Indians in a gentle way. Mrs. Moore and Adela, however, realize the stale and heartless officialise in the behaviour of the collector as well as other high official, and are disgusted by it. They clearly understand that the British women, in their attitude to the Indians, are worse. Social intimacy with the Indian women is unthinkable to them. Thus ‘the Bridge Party’ completely fails to bridge the gap between the English and the Indian.
