Significance of the Title of the Play The Glass Menagerie
The Glass Menagerie is a collection of little
animals made of glass. Laura Winglield’s collection of glass animals gives the
play its name and is its most important symbol. They represent a number of
facets of her personality fragility, other worldliness, and tragic beauty. Her collection of glass represents her own private world apart from reality. It is a world where she can hide and be safe. When Amanda tells Laura to practice typing, Laura instead plays with her glass. When Amanda is heard walking up the fire escape, she quickly hides her collection. She does this to hide her secret world from the others.
